1. What will the Foundation fund?
We can fund revenue and capital and will consider core costs as well as project funding.
2. Is there anything the Foundation wont fund?
Yes. The Foundation does not provide funding for:
- National charities or organisations outside Islington and the Cripplegate ward of the City of London
- Schemes or activities which would relieve central or local government of their statutory responsibilities
- Grants to replace cuts in funding made by the local authority or others
- Medical research or equipment
- National fundraising appeals
- Advancement of religion unless the applicant also offers non-religious services to the community
- Animal welfare
- Retrospective grants
- Commercial or business activities
- Grants for events held in the Church of St Giles-without Cripplegate
- Trips and outings.
3. How much can we apply for?
There is no limit for applications. The following grants were agreed in 2009:
| Number of grants | Amount Awarded | Average size of grant | |
| Grants over £50,000 | 7 | £476,200 | £67,600 |
| Grants between £10,000-£49,999 | 25 | £455,800 | £18,232 |
| Grants between £1,000-£9,999 | 21 | £91,692 | £4,366 |
| Grants under £1,000 | 5 | £3,300 | £660 |
| Total | 58 | £1,023,992 |
4. Will the Foundation only fund organisations working in its area of benefit?
Yes. Applications can only be considered from organisations working in the Cripplegate area of benefit. If you are unclear whether you can apply for funding you can contact us for advice.
5. We are a national/London wide organisation and we work in Islington. Can we apply for a grant?
Yes, but your application must show a significant impact on Islington residents.
6. Do you only give grants to registered charities?
No, but your organisation needs to have a constitution and management committee, provide accounts and offer a local service.
7. Can an organisation have more than one grant at a time?
We usually provide one grant at a time. We may consider an additional grant if there is a crisis. It would also consider an additional capital grant.
8. You have already funded our organisation. Can we come back for another grant for the same purpose?
Yes. We would need evidence of the effectiveness of the work and reasons why you wished to reapply. The Foundation has been supporting some organisations for many years.
9. How are decisions made?
All applicants are visited and the application is discussed in detail before it is submitted to Governors for a decision on funding. Decisions are based on the strength of the application. This includes whether the organisation/project is providing a local service and meets one of the Foundation’s priorities. It takes up to 3 months for your application to be assessed, but we cannot guarantee that your application will go to a particular meeting.
10. If a grant is agreed, what monitoring information will we be expected to provide?
All organisations are expected to provide an annual written monitoring report on their work. The Foundation may ask for more frequent reports or impose additional conditions of funding. Your project will be visited by Foundation staff.

11. What happens if the application is turned down?
We will write to you and let you know why the application was refused. If your application is refused, you must wait a year before applying again for a grant.
12. Where else can I apply for funding?
To find out more about how to get grants from other trusts see the Association of Charitable Foundations or the Directory for Social Change.
Some grant giving trusts in London are:
Trust for London, The City Bridge Trust, Big Lottery Fund and Richard Reeve’s Foundation.
Funder Finder provides software to help identify Charitable Trusts that might offer support.
Turn2Us is a charitable service that helps people to access the money available to them – through welfare benefits, grants and other sources of help.
13. Is there an appeals procedure?
You cannot appeal against Governors’ decisions about whether or not to make a grant. The Foundation will consider and respond to complaints about:
- Inappropriate behaviour by Foundation representatives
- An inappropriate length of time taken to offer or refuse a grant
- The Foundation not doing what it says it will do, either in general publicity or in correspondence with individuals or groups.
