Islington Community Chest

Islington Community Chest is funded by the Islington Strategic Partnership. Grassroots Grants funding is provided by the Office of the Third Sector.

Islington Community Chest provides small grants to voluntary and community groups based in Islington.

It is made up of:

  • Funding provided by the Islington Strategic Partnership for organisations with a turnover of less than £100,000. Grants of up to £5,000 are available for smaller projects. Grants of up to £10,000 are available for larger partnership projects such as environmental projects. Over £400,000 is available in 2009/2010.

  • Grassroots Grants funding provided by the Office of the Third Sector for organisations with a turnover of less than £30,000. Over £100,000 is available in 2009/2010.

There is one application form for both Community Chest and Grassroots Grants. The Panel will make decisions on the source of funding of your grant. You do not need to submit separate applications for each fund.

Grassroots Grants

A new Grassroots Grants programme for Islington started in September 2008. Groups must be working for the benefit of the Islington Community and its residents. Cripplegate Foundation successfully bid to run the programme for Islington.

The Office of the Third Sector has agreed to match any funds that Cripplegate Foundation manages to fundraise. More importantly this funding can be invested and used for future support of local groups.

Islington Community Chest aims to:

  • Support small and new local groups based in Islington with an income of less than £100,000 a year
  • Promote a vibrant cohesive community
  • Contribute to local regeneration
  • Empower people to take an active part in their communities
  • Develop trust between people and build confidence

Additional priorities in 2009/2010 are:

  • Improvement of local residents’ mental & physical health and independence and choice for older and vulnerable people
  • Improving the environment and tackling climate change
  • Raising educational achievement
  • Improving skills, encouraging volunteering and helping local residents find work
  • Contributing to safer communities: reducing antisocial behaviour & crime through drugs and alcohol

Decisions on applications for Islington Community Chest are made by a panel made up of Islington Community Empowerment Network, Islington Strategic Partnership and Cripplegate Foundation Governors.

The Foundation develops the capacity of groups through:

  • Allocating funding to Islington Voluntary Action Council to provide training, such as financial or management committee training, for groups funded through the Community Chest
